frontispiece engraved by the Marquise de Pompadour: Rodogune, Princess of Parthia, by Pierre Corneille, 1760

Friends Bibliophiles hello

De Pompadour we know the taste for books, weapons, weapons imitated by unscrupulous spin doctors, but do you know that it went further than "simple" love of books and she has personally invested in a book?

This book, here it is an edition of Rodogune, Princess of Parthia, a tragedy by Pierre Corneille, published in 1760, and whose frontispiece was "engraved etching by Madame de Pompadour.

I still know little about this new acquisition, but history tells that the Pompadour was very curious about the steps that come from the printing of a book.

There have been only twenty copies printed: 4 are known to CCFR, another (the copy of the brother of the Pompadour if not the favorite of itself) realized the auction record for a session of the Robert Hoe library in 1912, reaching $ 1200. This copy, one of the favorite books Hoe, was the following handwritten words: "In the year 1760, my sister [Madame de Pompadour ] wanting connoistre art of printing, we establishes in his apartment in Versailles, one of the printing presses and royalle was printed before her tragedy Rodogune. It took the North because her apartment is on display at North ... ". E. Picot, Bibliogr. Corneille, No. 599.

The copy presented here bears the bookplate of Ambrose Firmin Didot and Martin Jones. It is bound in red morocco of the time to lace the title piece is mounted longitudinally. It's a fairly elegant format in-4 [4] -80 pages.

If you have additional information, I am sure the lessee.
